Equitable rents a glidepath as CITs take the target-date market

Recordkeepers now decide which target-date franchise gets the shelf, and the terms of Equitable's T. Rowe Price series show what that gate is worth.

Equitable's Retirement Milestones T. Rowe Price Series, built with T. Rowe Price and Benefit Trust Company and carrying Equitable's own stable value fund inside, is the insurer's first target-date option in its Retirement Milestones CIT lineup—and it lands in a market where co-manufactured target-date CITs have passed mutual funds, holding $2.02 trillion of the $3.97 trillion target-date market as of the end of 2024, according to 401(k) Specialist's corporate roundup.

T. Rowe Price supplies the glidepath, Benefit Trust Company supplies the CIT trustee and administrative services, and Equitable supplies the recordkeeping relationship and the stable value sleeve that sits in the product. Nobody builds the whole thing, and nobody has to. A CIT with three manufacturers is a distribution agreement wearing a product label: the asset manager gets a plan sponsor's menu without having to win the recordkeeper, and the recordkeeper gets a target-date series without having to run a capital markets desk. What Equitable is paying for here is speed to shelf, and what T. Rowe Price is paying for is the shelf itself.

The Plan Sponsor Council of America gave Dan Houston, the retired chairman, president and chief executive of Principal Financial Group, its 2026 Lifetime Achievement Award, citing a career spent on retirement security and workplace plan design. Houston was instrumental in the development of Principal Total Retirement Solutions while serving as president of the firm's retirement division, an integrated approach to participants and clients; he also backed the SECURE and SECURE 2.0 Acts, testified before the Senate Special Committee on Aging, and sat on boards including the Employee Benefit Research Institute.

Will Hansen, PSCA's executive director, said Houston's influence extends beyond the organizations he has led, and Houston called the award a profound honor after spending every day of a 40-year career on this work. The award reads as a fair verdict on that record, but it also marks the model the industry built its economics around: the integrated recordkeeper that owns the relationship, the platform and the menu, which is precisely the position Equitable is now monetizing with someone else's glidepath on it.

That comparison cuts against the way this trade is usually described, because co-manufacturing looks like an asset manager winning DC distribution when it is closer to a recordkeeper converting its gate into fee income from managers who need it, which is why Principal has already pushed the same CIT wrapper into private markets under its own oversight, as this publication has argued, while the DOL's benchmark sits unresolved.

Watch the series count. Equitable has launched one target-date option inside a trust lineup it intends to expand, and the next mandate in DC will go to whichever manager sits on the right recordkeeper's shelf rather than to whichever glidepath posted the best decade.
